Versa is a lightweight aluminum chair that seamlessly transitions between lounge and work stool functions offering adaptability and increased productivity in a dynamic creative studio or workshop environment.
For this project, I was tasked with designing a chair in my own style. Through exploration, I realized that I wanted my chair to not only reflect my design aesthetic but also meet my personal needs. I began developing a dynamic chair that could adapt to the various demands I encounter while working in the design studio.
As I worked, I noticed a particular shape that could allow my design to support two different seating positions: a lounge chair and a work stool. It was exactly what I needed for both work and relaxation in the studio.
I further explored this bent plywood and acrylic design because I loved the contrast between the two materials, and its unique silhouette made it unlike any chair I had seen before. I then began constructing a full-scale prototype to test the design.
The prototype looked great, but it struggled to fulfill its intended function of assisting the user in an ever-evolving studio environment. It was large and heavy, making it difficult to switch between its two functions and move around the workspace. As a result, I pivoted and began exploring different materials that would better serve my purpose.
After much trial and error, I arrived at this final bent aluminum design and named it 'Versa.' It perfectly aligns with my clean design aesthetic, is easy to mass-produce, and is lightweight and nimble enough to maneuver around a studio environment.
Versa won a 2024 SIT Furniture Design Award.
